It's of course okay to connect it after deleting the old Windows partition. This is extended to a 16 byte value for gpt disks, presented as a GUID. (It should be fine to connect the old disk later, even with its contents intact. I would suggest re-cloning the disk again (half a TB won't hurt an EVO), then immediately disconnecting the old disk before trying to boot Windows. Even if you start the bootloader from the new disk, it'll still think that "C:" is on the old one. If you boot with just the new disk connected, it'll see that the same partition is now on a different device and automatically update the volume assignments for the new hardware ID.īut if you boot with both disks connected, Windows will actually continue using the old disk because it finds an exact match for the old hardware ID it remembers. Windows only: Freeware application Macrium Reflect Free creates disk image snapshots of any hard drive on your computer that you can restore on any other drive to bring your computer. It seems that Windows remembers volume letter assignments based on several different identifiers, but mainly the hardware ID (model/serial number).

After that, Ill make 2 clone drives from my removable HD and then disconnect my OS drive and see if both True Image and Reflect work.

I then need to learn how to make a bootable DVD and Ill also pick up some Thumb drives as well. Now going to do the same with True Image 15. Based on my experience, you must have the old HDD disconnected the first time you boot Windows after cloning. Currently I made an Image disk of my OS with Macrium.
